When you hire a contractor to install a $30,000 roof or a $40,000 siding job, the manufacturer’s certification of that contractor is one of the few real third-party signals you have. Manufacturers don’t certify everyone — in some programs (like GAF Master Elite), only the top 2–3% of roofing contractors in the country hold the credential. The certification process usually requires years in business, licensed and insured status, customer reviews and references, and ongoing training.
More practically: manufacturer certifications unlock warranties that aren’t available to non-certified installers. For example, GAF’s Golden Pledge warranty — which covers labor as well as materials for 25 years — is only available when the roof is installed by a Master Elite contractor. Same with CertainTeed’s SureStart PLUS, James Hardie’s ColorPlus finish coverage at the highest tier, and others. When you hire a non-certified installer, you’re leaving warranty value on the table whether you realize it or not.
Here are the certifications we currently hold, organized by service.
Roofing certifications
Master Elite
GAF Master Elite Certified
GAF’s top-tier roofing contractor designation. Approximately 2–3% of roofing contractors in North America hold the Master Elite credential. Required for installation of GAF’s Golden Pledge warranty, which covers labor and materials for up to 25 years.
5 Star Contractor
CertainTeed 5 Star Contractor
CertainTeed’s top consumer-facing contractor designation. Required for installation of CertainTeed’s SureStart PLUS warranty, which extends material and workmanship coverage well beyond the standard manufacturer terms.
Pro Select
Atlas Pro Select Roofing Installer
Atlas Roofing’s certified installer designation. Atlas manufactures the StormMaster impact-resistant shingle line and the Pinnacle Pristine series with Scotchgard Protector.
Siding certifications
Alliance Preferred
James Hardie Alliance Preferred Contractor
James Hardie’s contractor program for installers committed to Hardie’s strict installation standards. Required to register the ColorPlus 15-year finish warranty and to maintain the full 30-year non-prorated substrate warranty.
Certified Installer
LP SmartSide Certified Installer
Louisiana-Pacific’s certified installer designation for SmartSide engineered wood siding. Required for proper installation per the SmartSide warranty terms (including the 5-year 100% labor and material replacement coverage and the 50-year prorated substrate warranty).
Certified Installer
VSI Certified Installer
Vinyl Siding Institute certification — the industry-wide credential for vinyl siding installation. VSI’s certified installer program tests installers on proper preparation, fastening, expansion gaps, and trim integration per ASTM standards.
Window certifications
Premier Contractor
Andersen Windows Premier Contractor
Andersen’s contractor designation for installers of Andersen’s 400 Series, A-Series, and E-Series window lines. Andersen is one of the most respected window manufacturers in the country for higher-end homes and historic restoration work.
Premier Contractor
Cornerstone Building Brands Premier Contractor
Cornerstone Building Brands is the parent company of Mastic, Simonton, Ply Gem, and several other major exteriors brands. The Premier Contractor designation applies across the portfolio, covering both vinyl siding and replacement windows.
What this means when you hire us
Certifications don’t replace good workmanship. A certified contractor who cuts corners is still a contractor cutting corners. But certification is one of the cleanest third-party signals available, and the warranty access alone is worth thousands of dollars over the life of a roof or siding installation. Whichever material you choose, when we install it, you get the manufacturer’s strongest warranty tier — not the watered-down version.
If you’re vetting other Knoxville contractors and want to compare, here’s a short checklist:
- Ask which manufacturer-specific tier they hold — not just “we’re certified.” GAF Master Elite vs. GAF Certified are different things. James Hardie Elite Preferred vs. Alliance Preferred are different. Get the specific tier name.
- Confirm the certification is current. Most manufacturer certifications require annual training, current license and insurance, and customer feedback to maintain. Lapsed certifications are common.
- Ask what warranty tier you’ll receive. If they hold the certification, you should get the extended warranty tier. If they hold the cert but won’t register your install for the extended warranty, ask why.
- Verify on the manufacturer’s contractor locator. Most manufacturers publish their certified contractor list on their website. James Hardie, GAF, CertainTeed, Andersen, and others all have searchable installer locators.
