Knoxville is hard on siding. Summers are long and humid, thunderstorms roll through much of the year, and winters swing above and below freezing — sometimes in the same week. Wood rots, cheap vinyl warps and chalks, and painted trim peels. That’s why so many Knox County homeowners ask us about James Hardie® fiber cement siding.
North Knox Siding & Windows is a family-owned Knoxville contractor that has been installing siding since 1996. We are a James Hardie Alliance Preferred Contractor, and we install Hardie plank lap siding, board-and-batten, shingle and shake panels, and Hardie trim. Our own crews do the work from tear-off to final walkthrough, and we stand behind it with a lifetime workmanship warranty.
Why fiber cement makes sense in East Tennessee
Fiber cement is made from cement, sand, and cellulose fibers. For a Knoxville home, that means:
- Moisture and rot resistance. Fiber cement doesn’t rot like wood when humid summers and wind-driven rain push water at the walls.
- Insects and woodpeckers. Termites and carpenter bees don’t eat it.
- Fire resistance. James Hardie siding is noncombustible — worth considering if you live near wooded lots and ridgelines.
- Dimensional stability. It doesn’t stretch and shrink with temperature swings the way vinyl can, so long walls stay straight.
- Paint that lasts. Hardie’s ColorPlus® factory finishes are baked on. We’ll walk you through the current palette and finish warranty terms.
James Hardie engineers its products for different climates (the HardieZone® system). During your estimate we’ll show you which product line Hardie specifies for our area and why.
How we install it
Fiber cement only performs — and the manufacturer warranty only holds — when it’s installed to James Hardie’s specifications. Every North Knox Hardie job includes:
- Full tear-off. We remove the old siding instead of covering it, so we can see the wall.
- Sheathing inspection and repair. Soft or rotted sheathing gets replaced, and you’ll know what we found before it’s covered up.
- Weather-resistive barrier. New house wrap, lapped and taped, with proper flashing at windows, doors, and roof-wall intersections — where water damage usually starts.
- Correct clearances and fastening. Hardie specifies gaps above roofs, decks, and grade, plus nailing patterns. We follow them.
- Trim and details. Hardie trim, corner boards, soffit, and fascia, finished so the whole exterior looks right.
- Clean site and final walkthrough. Debris hauled away, magnets run for nails, and a walkthrough with you.
Most of our crews are our own employees who have been with us for years. When a big job needs another skilled trade, we bring in vetted partners we’ve worked with for a long time — never day labor.
